Two, Too, or To?

Today we'll discuss three words that sound exactly the same, but all have very different meanings. The words two, too and to are what we call homophones (they sound the same, but have different meanings and spelling).

Two - probably the easiest one, this is a number. For example; "I'll have two coffees" or "that will be two dollars."

Don't get it confused with tow though, the meaning and sound are very different.

Too - this word is most often used to describe an extreme feeling for an adjective. We usually use it to express a negative feeling. For example: "I don't want to go for a walk, it's too hot" or "I can't buy that computer, it's too expensive"

We often want to say "too much" when we use the word too, but we have to be careful because we can't use this phrase when we are using another adjective as well. For Example: Saying "I was too much busy last weekend" or "it is too much hot" is incorrect.

However, if you say, "This is too much rice, I can't eat it all" or "That computer is too much, I can't buy it" that is correct because there is no other adjective.

Another way that we can use the word too is to agree with someone.

For example: Lindy - "I like that dress"

Sindi - "Me too"

To - as a preposition this word is often used when we want to give direction or say where we are going or who we are going to see.

"Drive from the airport to the hotel"

"I am talking to my friend Sindi"

"I am happy to see you"

We also use to when we are talking about future plans or intentions and use the phrase "going to".

"I am going to the hotel now"

"We are going to Dubai next week"

To is also used with infinitives. There are many examples of infinitives, so we will cover this more in depth in a separate blog, but here is an example for you;

"I want to watch TV"

All together! I, too, am happy to see two birds in the tree. 😖🤯🤪

English can be a crazy and complicated language, but make sure that you always have fun when learning it!!
